Postcode Challange 2010 WRAP UP & PHOTOS
Nathan Cronan (Opens), Ash McDonald (Juniors), Mick Gordon (Masters over 35), Dave Winders (masters over 45), Gary Dickson (masters over 55) and Jade Antoineff (Women’s) have been crowned Brisbane's Best surfers for 2010. In 2ft surf at Sunrise Beach the Primitive Surf Post Code Challenge ran for 2 days before the finals heated up late Sunday.
Nathan has had a couple of bridesmaid tags in the PCC before but this was to be his year. In testing conditions Nathan ripped and just pipped Ash McDonald who also had a stellar weekend posting a 9.7 on his last wave in his rd 3 heat. Hugo Prasser and Garth Lewis finished 3rd and 4th respectively and definitely earned the spot in the final as these were the form surfers of the event all posting great scores throughout.
Ash McDonald, the busiest surfer of the weekend (making both opens and junior finals), went one better in the junior division. Ash made easy work of the difficult conditions while the other finalists were finding it hard to post a score. Cam Cotterell made a charge grabbing some scores late in the final but just falling short in second. Tom McGiffen made a great fist of his first PCC grabbing 3rd and Will Hohnke surfed great all event but couldn’t find rhythm in the final to finish 4th.
After many attempts Mick Gordon finally nabbed his first PCC crown in the over 35’s. Gary Brownrigg slotted into 2nd place in his first PCC event with Ben Arnell and John Ziglioto filling 3rd and 4th positions. Mick has been surfing the Primitive comps since the early days so congrats to him for jagging a win.
Over 45’s had a heap of entrants this year and made for some entertaining viewing. Funniest thing would be the grudge match between brothers Gary and Brian Hall. The boys shaped off in the semi finals and there was more water splashing then a day at wet’n’wild. Gary got the better of that exchange to advance to the final where he finished 4th. First place found its way to Dave ‘wiggly’ Winders who got the nod over Brett Jackson who had been a standout in the earlier rounds giving the winders crew something to cheer about on the beach. Paul Curran was the man in 3rd place at the final siren.
Over 55’s saw a tightly contested final in which John Christie (father of Primitive Rider Tara) led most of the way until getting pipped at the post by Gary Dickson. Peter Kearney and Peter Vos came in 3rd and 4th in waves that were hard to find scoring potential.
Kelly Giles (who most of you would know from her days at primitive) had a vision of Occy putting the PCC championship ring on her finger at the presentation. Unfortunately that didn’t work out with Kel finishing in fourth place. Jade Antoineff clinched her 2nd PCC victory with a very tight win over Brooke Fogarty who was getting massive support from the Christian Surfers tent. Jessie Brennand finished in 3rd position.
2 spots were to be auctioned of in our specialty heat between Mark ‘Occy’ Occhilupo vs Nick Vitko (primitive team rider). Bidding was fierce and eventually Garth Lewis won the chance to surf in red with Occ and Adam Johnston would line up in white with Vity. In the first few minutes there was an awesome exchange with Vity posting a high 8 to take the lead. After 20 minutes it looked like the white team were in charge when something loomed on the horizon and fell in Occy’s lap. This wave gifted him a 9.5 which was enough to steal the heat from Vity and AJ’s grasp. $700 was raised at auction and passed on to the Christian Surfers who are using the funds to sponsor an underprivileged Brazilian child known as Alberto. Thanks for everyone involved in a first for Primitive Surf and something I’m sure everyone at the beach will remember.
A big shout out goes to all our sponsors for supporting this event for 2010.
