The Postcode Challenge is an annual surfing competition that decides who the best surfer living in Brisbane is. Primitive Surf have been running the Postcode Challenge for 5 years now and each year the competition gets hotter, the surfing gets crazier and the prizes get bigger!
In order to qualify for the PCC all you have to do is prove that you have a Brisbane address (somewhere between Caboolture and Beenleigh, excluding the Islands) by either providing a driver's license or some other proof of address.
The competitors are divided into divisions which include Juniors (under 20's), Opens, Women's (all ages), Masters (over 35's), Masters (over 45's) and Masters (over 55's).
Each year the prize purse grows and 2011 totaled over $10 000 worth of prizes including a trip to Tonga courtesy of world Surfaris and the coveted custom PCC Champions ring provided by Peter Gordon Jeweler's. Legendary Australian surfer Mark Occhilupo came along to the 2010 event to help out in the commentary booth and surfed in a charity celebrity heat and last year Sunshine Coast local and Billabong Free-surfin freak Wade Goodall was our special guest.
The event takes place somewhere within the Noosa Shire, with the preffered location being the fun peaks of Sunrise Beach. As the Noosa boardriders take care of all the judging, the event is mobile and depending on conditions can be moved as far north as the Noosa River mouth.

The 2012 Post Code challenge is scheduled for 19th - 20th of May, up at Sunrise Beach on the Sunshine Coast with entries closing soon. Contact Primitive Surf for further information or come in to the store to fill out your entry form accompanied with your proof of address and entry fee.
Nathan Cronan goes back to back Post Code Challenges…
He won the PCC last year after a couple of close calls but this year Nathan Cronan proved that 2010 was no fluke by taking out the opens final in solid and windy conditions at Sunrise Beach. Other winners for 2011 were Lauren McGregor in the WOMENS, Garth Lewis in the OVER 35’s, Mick Greco in the OVER 45’s, Greg Nickerson in the OVER 55’s and Will Hohnke in the JUNIORS.
The Saturday had a great forecast of 2-3 foot waves and all day offshores and it lived up to the expectations. We started the day with 40 odd surfers and by 4pm had only 4 surfers remaining in the Opens. A few surfers who did not make the Sunday but came extremely close were Anton Petterson, Garth Lewis, Hugo Prasser and Tait Whitelaw.
Every Post Code Challenge Dale and I wake at 5.30am and go for a surf. Why? For 2 reasons. 1, it's the only chance we have for a surf that day and 2 because if we can go out and do a few turns we can class the conditions surfable for all. We did that again this year but as the forecast for the Sunday had predicted the southerly wind had come up and was already a good 20 knots from the south. The shorey was still ok early on the high tide but little did we know that the south swell would show and get bigger as the morning went on. Noosa main beach was not an option with the swell direction and tide so all PCC competitors would have to battle the elements at Sunrise….
By the time the finals had come around the back bank was a good 4-5 feet and was a mission just to get to, let alone surf. The Over 55's and the Girls did an amazing job just to get out the back and anyone that got out there and snagged one of the bombs surely would win their divisions. Greg Nickerson in the 55's paddled and duck dived for about 10minutes and could have turned around many times but he didn't. Eventually he not only got out the back but scored a wave that the judges would score as enough to give him the win. 2010 winner Gary Dickson was runner up with John Christie 3rd.
Brooke Fogerty and Lauren Mc Gregor also showed guts to get out onto the back bank and both get good waves including Lauren's left that she went to town on and did 3 big manouvers on the wave that not only gave Lauren the win in the final of the Womens but also grab the highest wave score of the weekend and take home the PCC Ecel-ent award. It was great to watch... Brooke came a very close second with Lauren only getting the one solid score and Brooke getting two. Claire Mobbs came in 3rd with Ellie Weinert in 4th.
The Over 35’s had new entry this year… last years Open finalist, absolute ripper and all round nice guy, Garth Lewis was now 35. Ben Arnell gave him a great challenge but Garth won out and took the title. Tim Butcher had been surfing awesome all morning and came in 3rd with Andy Rice 4th and 2010 winner Mick Gordon in 5th.
Will Hohnke came last in last years final of the Juniors. In 2011 he was the only surfer to get out onto the back bank, a solid 5 foot right came through, he threw a huge gouge in the wave face, the crowd on the hill went ballistic and the Junior Final was over in the first few minutes. In a great show of sportsmanship Edward Watson was too sick to surf on Sunday so he handed his spot over to his good friend who got 3d in his semi final on Saturday Gareth Owens. Gareth did his mate proud and came in 2nd with Dan Mitchell 3rd and Zac Marsh 4th.
The Over 45’s was the 2nd largest division this year with 17 competitors. Many of these guys know each other and it’s competitive but extremely fun. 2010 winner Dave Winders was out with an injury so the field was wide open and any of these guys could have won the event. The Saturday night claimed a few of the favourites as the stories filtered in early Sunday morning. In the end it was only .2 of a point on 2 judges sheets that separated mates Mick Greco and Mark Tynan. Mick ended up with the win and bragging rights for 12 months (and yes he will use them), Mark came 2nd with Gary Hall 3rd, Ray Bissett in 4th and Brett Jackson in 5th.
The Opens final was stacked! Last years winner Nathan Cronan had made it all the way through the Saturday as did 2010 runner up Ash McDoanld. The other 2 of the 4 were long time PCC rippers Adam Johnson and Kiel Weinart....they are 4 very good surfers to say the least. AJ got a big solid left and left his mark...was it his year? Then Nathan got a solid right and did 4 great turns to score a 7.5...Nathan was back but on the beach with a mission paddle out. Kiel did nothing wrong but get an unfortunate paddle out that run the fuel tank down to near zero. With Nathan struggling to get back out both Ash and AJ needed only a 5 point ride to win the event with 5 minutes to go....the whole crowd were on the top of the sand dunes including (for the first time) the judges...it was a special 5 minutes......eventually Nathan scratches out the back and somehow has the energy to not only get himself into a nice left but absolutely smash it with 2 big hacks...amazing....game over...your the champ for 2011!!
But at the presentation the look of the other 3 guys faces were all the same ...next year he is ours.
